In Tel Aviv, On The “Eastern Border” - What to do?

Now we’ll have a look at the eastern border of Tel Aviv, which is marked by the Ayalon Highway and the main train line. Here you’ll find a lot of new and high priced Tel Aviv, but there are also plenty of places to go and see in this mostly modern Tel Aviv.

The Tel Aviv Central Bus Station

At the bottom end of this strip is the Tel Aviv Central Bus Station.  It’s big - at one time the biggest in the world, it’s ugly and it’s not really a place to spend a lot of time in.  We mention it so you know where it is if you need to catch a bus out of Tel Aviv to Jerusalem or other city within Israel. Anyway, the station is located just west of Road 2, Highway 20 and the Hagana train station off of Levinsky street.  Tel Aviv Bus Station Info Here

HaArba’a Street and HaShmonaim Street

North on the Road 2, Just before Kaplan street, you’ll find HaShmonaim street and HaArba’a Streets.  On both of these streets and especially HaArba’a Street you’ll find a good number of quality and interesting restaurants and cafes.  At the west end of HaArba’a Street is the Tel Aviv Cinematheque movie house.  During most evenings, these streets are filled with restaurant goers and people generally enjoying some Tel Aviv night life. There really are quite a few good restaurants in this area - check out our listing page here: HaArba’a Street and HaShmonaim Street Business Listing

Sarona Tel Aviv

Sarona tel Aviv is one of the newest entertainment commercial areas of Tel Aviv.  Much like HaTachana near Jaffa, the Sarona area has good selection of bars and restaurants as well as shops and boutiques too.  The Sarona area used to be an agricultural area of German Templar Settlers from around the late 1800’s.  It was recently refurbished into the commercial area that it is today and there is some of the history still preserved there, including a bowling lane from that time period. Be sure and stop by the visitor area for more information.  A good place to spend a late afternoon to early evening, or for an early morning stroll and a good cup of coffee. Interestingly the Sarona area sits directly across, on the south side of HaKirya - the main Israel Defense Forces base in Tel Aviv. Some of the buildings now in the Sarona area were moved across the road from HaKirya as they were also originally part of the Sarona area. More Shopping In Israel Info Here

Azrieli Center

One of tel Aviv’s newest and busiest shopping malls is located in this set of three office towers on the north east corner of Kaplan and Menachem Begin roads.  The design of the three buildings is somewhat unique as each building , when looking down on them from above, is the shape of a circle, square and a triangle. The center is about a 10 minute walk from the Sarona area and also connects to the HaShalom train station.  The mall has a two level food court, lots of shops to spend time and money in and the center also is home to an International Chain Hotel.  There is plenty of parking (although not cheap) and there is a kosher restaurant and an indoor observation deck at the top of the round building. Tel Aviv Museum Of Art, The Opera House Complex

On the north side of HaKirya, west of the Road two, on Shaul HaMelech Street, you’ll find a wonderful complex of new modern buildings housing the Central Tel Aviv Court, the main Tel Aviv Public Library, the Tel Aviv Museum of Art and the National Opera Center, including the Cameri theater.  This area is, of course a great place to walk around and admire some new and interesting architecture - especially the new wing of the art museum.  But if catching world-class production opera or musical is your thing, then you must get yourself tickets to something at the Opera House or at the Cameri Theater.  And if art is your thing, then you’re in luck as the Tel Aviv Museum of Art has some fine art exhibits from the classics to modern and just about everything in between.  More Israel Arts and Culture Info Here

Kikar HaMedina

A large circular round-about lined with a number of high-end retail shops cafes and boutiques.  From Azrieli go north on Road 2 and turn left at Jabotinsky street.  Jabotinsly street will dump you right into the kikar. If brand- name is what you’re looking for then Kikar HaMedina may be your place.  The only problem here is that other than the shops and cafes, there really isn’t much else of interest around this area.  The center area of the kikar is unfortunately a barren waste land.  There is no real park there and no real tree coverage either.  But again, if brand-name shopping is your thing, then this should be a major stop for you. Ramat Aviv Neighborhood

Ramat Aviv is the most northern part of Tel Aviv.  It starts just after the HaYarkon park and Rokach Boulevard and goes north to the Glilot Junction, just before Herzliya.  There are a few interesting places in Ramat Aviv that would be of interest to the tourist coming to Israel.  First off, Ramat Aviv is home to the Tel Aviv University, which is where you will find the Beit Hatufutsot - Museum of the Jewish People in the Diaspora.  This museum depicts the life of Jewish people in countries outside of Israel for the last 2500 years. Ramat Aviv is also home to the Eretz Yisrael Museum - The Land of Israel Museum.  This museum has a wide variety of exhibits from archaeological displays to modern photographic exhibits.  Both museums are easily within minutes of each other, so visiting both on the same day is a great way to spend a day in North Tel Aviv. More Israel Museum Info Here If shopping is your thing, then you can’t go wrong by dropping into the Ramat Aviv Mall.  This mall is one of the most expensive malls to rent retail store space. It is home to many boutique and fashion brand-name chain stores - both international and Israeli shops can be found here.  In a bit of an unofficial high-end store battle with the Kikar HaMedina, the Ramat Aviv Mall has won a round against the Kikar, when Louis Vuitton decided to move its store from the Kikar to the Ramat Aviv Mall. Entrance to the beach is free, but if you come by car, then there is a large parking lot there located there, but there is a fee to park there.  Alternatively you can access the beach from the Tayelet that continues north of the Namal and the Reading power station.  It is a great beach for lounging and relaxing , and it is well used by families as well.  Reading between the lines, Tel Baruch beach is a little bit quieter than some of it’s more southern neighbors.
