Coming2Israel.com - Taking The Train In Israel

Ah, the romance of riding the rails!  When people think of train travel, they conjure up images of smoke billowing from the chimney of a steam locomotive.  They hear the ring of the engines bell.  They feel the vibration as the train clakety-clacks down the line.  Well, once upon a time, railway travel in Israel may have had its romantic side, with the getting there being, possibly, most of the fun, but now it’s all about point A to B, and getting there on time.  Not to say that traveling by train in Israel is not any fun, but for most Israelis it’s about getting to work or back home on time. Today’s modern Israeli train system is to commuters in Israel, what the subway is to the commuters of cities like New York, or London.  And as a visitor to Israel, you have the benefit of using the train for both business and pleasure. The Israel Railways corporation Ltd. currently runs and manages the Israel Railways.  It was established in 2003, as before that it operated as a division of the Ports and Railways Authority.  It is estimated that the ridership in 2012 was over 40 million tickets sold with passengers riding the, just over, 1000 km of rail in the country.  All this starting from the 86.5 km of track laid between Jaffa and Jerusalem, the J & J line, which opened in September 26, 1892.  The original Jaffa station is still standing today at HaTachana - The new station compound in Tel Aviv-Jaffa.
