Calling Israel From Abroad - Calling Israel From Where You Are:
There are basically four things that you need to know to make a call from outside of Israel to Israel:
1) Your International / Long Distance Access Number:
In order to call Israel from where you live - outside of Israel, you, of course, need to dial the number that gets
you the long distance service line from where you are.
So, for example, in the US and Canada, you would dial the number 011.
2) The Country Code For Israel:
After dialing the long distance access number, you need to dial the country code for Israel, which is:
Israel telephone country code: 972.
3) The Area / City / Cellphone Codes For Israel:
In Israel, LAND LINE area codes are made up of a two digit number starting with the number zero (0). For
example, the Tel Aviv are code is 03.
CELL PHONE / Mobile phone area codes are a three digit number corresponding to the cell phone service
company that the subscriber is using. All Israeli cell phone companies have a three digit “area” code to identify
them, also starting with the number zero (0).
Note that when calling from abroad, you do not need to insert the zero (0) to the number that you are dialing.
4) The Actual Number Of The Recipient Of Your Call:
The last part of the number that you need to dial is the actual phone number assigned to the recipient that you
wish to call. It is comprised of a seven (7) digit number - a similar system to the phone numbers of the United
States and Canada.
Some additional notes:
1) Again, when you are calling an Israeli phone number from outside of Israel, the zero (0) drops out of the
number that you need to dial.
2) Israeli toll-free numbers are actually only six digits long, and most are NOT international toll-free numbers.
In other words, the Israeli toll-free numbers, usually, only work when you are dialing them from an Israeli
phone.
There are also special four digit cell phone quick access numbers that work when calling from an Israeli cell
phone number. To use these, from your Israeli cellphone, dial the asterisk - *, or “star” from your keypad and
then the four digit number.
Putting It All Together To Make The Call To Israel From Where In The World You Are:
So, here is an example of what you need to dial from abroad in order to contact an Israeli phone number.
Calling An Israeli Land-Line Number:
+972 C YYY ZZZZ
Calling the land line explained in words:
1) Dial your international access number,
2) Then dial the Israeli country code,
3) Then second digit (NO zero) of the Israeli city / area code, and,
4) Lastly dial the seven digit number.
Calling An Israeli Cell Phone Number:
+972 5X YYY ZZZZ
Calling the cell phone explained in words:
1) Dial your international access number,
2) Then dial the Israeli country code,
3) Then second TWO digits (NO zero) of the Israeli cell phone code, and,
4) Lastly dial the seven digit number.
Note that the + sign indicates that you need to dial the long distance access number for the place that you are.
The X’s, Y’s, Z and C, are simply place holders for the numbers that you actually need to dial.
Also note, again, that we have dropped the zero (0) out of the area code portion of the number - for both cell
phone and land-line calls.
Making Phone Calls Within Israel:
The first thing you need to consider when making a call from one Israeli phone to another Israeli phone,
whether it be a land-line or a cell phone, is - where you are and whose phone you are using:
*** A quick point about why where you are calling from is important: ***
When we say where, we specifically mean, where in terms of if you are using a hotel room telephone versus any
other land-line phone. As we have pointed out in our Israeli Hotel Primer page, if you use the telephone in the
room of the hotel that you are staying in, make sure that you know the rates that you are being charged -
usually calculated by the FULL minute - to make your call. Hotel phone rates are not cheap and you could find
out that even for a local call, the rates could be more expensive than if you used your own cell phone to call
Israel, like a long-distance call.
If you have no choice but to use the hotel phone, be brief, and give the person that you are calling the hotel
number and have them call you back in your room. Generally, incoming calls to your hotel room are not
charged to you - but, again, you should check to be sure. Lastly, don’t forget to dial the number to gain access
to the outside line from the hotel - usually the number nine (9)
Calling From A Land-Line To Another Land-Line Within The SAME City / Area Code:
If you are using an Israeli land-line and you are calling within the same city or area code as the number that you
need to dial, you simply need to dial the digits of the phone number without the area / city code.
For example, calling from a Tel Aviv land-line to another Tel Aviv land-line - 03 1234567, drop the 03 and just dial
the remaining seven (7) digits of the telephone number - without the 03, just the 12341567.
Calling From A Land-Line To Another Land-Line in a different City / Area Code:
In this case, calling from city to city etc., you add the city code of the area that you are calling to.
From the example above, if you are in Jerusalem and you wish to call the number in Tel Aviv, you would dial 03
1234567.
Calling Within Israel From a Land-Line To An Israeli Cell Phone:
In this case, you must dial the full Israeli cell phone number of the person that you wish to speak with. In other
words you must dial all ten digits of their cell phone number WITH the zero (0):
As the example from above: 05X YYY ZZZZ
Calling from an Israeli Cell Phone to Another Israeli Cell Phone, Within Israel:
As with the example above, calling within Israel from a land-line to an Israeli cell phone, you must dial the full
Israeli cell phone number of the person that you wish to speak with. In other words you must dial all ten digits
of their cell phone number WITH the zero (0):
As the example from above: 05X YYY ZZZZ
Calling From Israel To An International Phone Number - Calling Outside Of Israel:
As a reminder, see the note above regarding where you are making the telephone call from.
Israel has a number of telephone company service providers, including the cell phone companies as well. Each
company has there own international dialing code to make calls outside of Israel. See the link at the top of the
page to the Wikipedia page of Telephone Numbers In Israel.
Basically, to call an outside line, use one of the international access codes, or if you have none, 00, followed by
the country code, area code and the local number that you need to contact.
Example without a specific Israeli service phone provider:
00 1 AAA YYY ZZZZ
AAA = Area code of the number that you are dialing
YYY ZZZZ = seven digits of the local number number that you are dialing.
Example with an Israeli service phone provider:
01X 1 AAA YYY ZZZZ
NOTE: that the 1 for calling North America internationally is still needed after the, now, three digits of the
service provider international access code.
X = the specific code for the Israeli service provider that you wish to use to make your call. See the Wikipedia
link above for more information.
AAA = Area code of the number that you are dialing
YYY ZZZZ = seven digits of the local number number that you are dialing.
Other International Calling Options From Israel:
You can purchase calling cards throughout Israel that may provide a cheaper rate than using the local to Israel
providers.
As well, as an example, AT&T has an international toll-free number that you can dial to call the USA and make it
a collect call or allows you to pay for the call directly with a credit card.
As always, check before you dial.
